Last Saturday, Rihanna joined the throngs of designers showing their collections at London Fashion Week with her first collection for UK high-street label River Island. Models strutted down the runway in ’90s grunge-inspired ankle-length tank frocks with slits thigh high- and higher, crop tops and pencil skirts,figure-hugging maxi skirts and loose jumpsuits. Although most critics have been negative, one cannot blame Rihanna. After all, the collection is for River Island,a high-street retailer popular with modern fashion-forward youths, so the flirty and sassy pieces would appeal to the young and fashionable crowd.
No collection is complete without an ad campaign. And as Rihanna unveiled her first ever clothing campaign, she hired American model Charlotte Free and VS Angel Jourdan Dunn as well as models Tao Okamoto,Ataui Deng and Bambi Northwood Blyth to front the campaign. Photographed by Mario Sorrenti, both the clothes and the set are inspired by the 1900s. Against a backdrop of vibrant purple and blue, models pose on a car clad in an array of pieces from the collection including a striped bra top with high-waisted shorts and a bright yellow figure-hugging dress with a back slit.
Out of the 120 pieces from the collection, here are some of my favourites:
Overall, I think the collection was great as it was a triumph of young, streetwise style and ElleUK even praised the collection, saying it was "an ode to all things high fashion," and describing it as “Eighties Norma Kamali meets Alexander Wang luxe sportswear.”“Rihanna really does have a great eye for fashion and the attention to details and styling elevated the collection to proper collector’s item status,” concluded the magazine. Fans of River Island can look forward to the upcoming Spring and Summer range from the collection which is slated to arrive in March.
